By the time you read this, you should be able to see the collection of short films made for the seventh annual blood drive supported by Women in Horror Month.
For the last few years, the anthology has been curated by Jen and Sylvia Soska. (Followers of this blog should be familiar with them). The Soskas, Jessica Cameron, Jill Sixx, Gigi Saul Guerrro and others have contributed shorts to the cause over the years.
A couple hours ago, I got to watch Patricia Chica's "Bloody Burlesque" and it not only fits with what I've seen of the Massive Blood Drive PSAs from years past, but also features one of the more fun aspects of the horror community-- the burlesque of the title.
In less than three minutes, we get to see Tonya Kay seductively remove her clothes and then douse herself in what we can only assume is blood. Scream queen Tiffany Shepis serves as the show's emcee. It's a dialogue-free show, with an interesting audience made of mostly elderly men and women.
These shorts have been fun, but let's not forget why they exist: to highlight the talented and far too often underappreciated women working in the genre and to get people to donate blood.
The Soskas are leaders in the field and are easily the biggest supporters of other women in the biz and I look forward to the shorts they pull together every year.
