The Reality of AiZ: Alice in Zombieland

Josh Cook, author of Alice in Zombieland, shares what scares him. Enjoy! (Updated with contest information!)

I get asked a lot what was the inspiration behind my first novel, AiZ: Alice in Zombieland (Complete Saga). Like so many other writers, my answer is put one simple way – real life. I’m not saying I was attacked by zombies or experimented on by an evil drug company (but man wouldn’t it be so much cooler if I really was!), but the threads that run through AiZ came from real loss.
A little over a year ago, I began to lose everyone that was important to me. Not by death, but by choice (which may hurt almost as bad). My girlfriend at the time and I went through a really bad break-up. I lost my job and that led to my family and I not speaking. Through all this, I ended up losing my place to live.
That was a lot of losing, and I didn’t think I could take it anymore. Instead of doing anything drastic and stupid, I turned to writing. I had already written The Interview, which is sort of an introduction to the entire Zombie A.C.R.E.S. storyline. With that one story already gaining a little popularity, and the rest of my life going down the toilet, I poured everything I had into writing the first season of Zombie A.C.R.E.S. short stories. These short stories would eventually become AiZ: Alice in Zombieland (Complete Saga).
Putting my all into Zombie A.C.R.E.S. was a perfect way to just keep me busy so I didn’t get into trouble, but it also became a sort of therapy for me. It was easy be empathetic with Alice and Gee when they lost the only family they have since I was going through a loss of family myself. A terrible break-up is a little easier to take when you one of your main characters kills his fiancée.
When I write I dig deep for any emotional reality to pour in. It is these emotions that make up a story - Even when you are dealing with the walking dead.
